2018 Safe Place® Implementation Training

Last month, NSPN hosted individuals from eight states for a Safe Place Implementation Training. Staff from agencies in Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Virginia sent staff to learn more about Safe Place and how to implement the program
successfully. Here are some quotes from training participants:

  • “The training was great! I feel like I have a much better grasp on program expectations.”
  • “…great use of my time – very informational.”
  • “I’m excited to get Safe Place off the ground…”

In addition to having a great group who came to learn about program implementation, NSPN gained new ideas and insight to better assist licensed agencies in promoting Safe Place. For more information, please visit www.nationalsafeplace.org or contact the Safe Place team at [email protected].

New Report Highlights LGBTQ Youth Homelessness in America

Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago released its second research-to-impact brief, "Missed Opportunities: LGBTQ Youth Homelessness in America," which highlights the specific experiences of youth people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) and face homelessness.

Chapin Hall shared the following about their findings:

"We learned that, compared to heterosexual and non-transgender youth, LGBTQ youth experience higher rates of homelessness. They also face a higher risk of early death and other adversities. On the positive side, the research points to actionable opportunities to better meet the needs of LGBTQ young people in our collective efforts to end youth homelessness."

The first impact brief released by Chapin Hall, "Missed Opportunities: Youth Homelessness in America," shared results from their national survey on unaccompanied youth homelessness. The findings show that nearly 4.2 million youth and young adults in America experienced some form of homelessness over the course of a year.

Youth Invited to Share Artwork

National Safe Place Network (NSPN) is excited to collect a variety of artwork for “Heart of the Matter,” a digital publication that invites youth to share their stories through art. Youth have significant experiences and perspectives to convey, and their voices are powerful. “Heart of the Matter” serves to emphasize the creativity, passion, and spirit displayed by young people as they overcome challenges, chase their dreams, and build bright futures.

For more information and to submit artwork, please visit www.nspnetwork.org/heart-of-the-matter. The "Heart of the Matter" campaign is scheduled to release in October 2018.
